Without a chicken to dig it up! I've just added a few more plants in the seemingly impossible hope that it will stop the hens from scratching around the base of the lupins. My mum would simply suggest I do not allow the chickens out of their run which would mean no little feet to dig up the plants but I take great delight from watching the garden come alive with these bundles of fluff.
