I am not a happy camper. The hen arrived two weeks ago but the hen house has not yet materialised and the weather is hotting up. This means that Lola is warming up throughout the day as we can't open windows too wide in case she can get out. It seems now that the people who wanted rid of her have got their wish they really don't care about her welfare enough to deliver the house as they said they would (we'll have to dismantle it and drive it home before cleaning and reassembling). I strongly believe that we have a responsibility to any creature we look after so I am not impressed.
Talking of Lola, she has met the other hens which of course, resulted in a tussle for the pecking order but as there is such a height and weight disadvantage it wouldn't be a fair fight and we can't house them together. It's just nice to see Lola strutting around in the vegetable patch, scratching at the parsley and chasing after pigeons that have landed on the lawn.. She's also still enjoying her mirror and is often found sitting by it.
Gently does it and we've worked at gaining her trust by sitting with her, talking gently feeding her grapes (which chickens love) from our hands. We also stroke her when she is settled for the night although she isn't used to being handled so isn't very keen on this. Most of the time we leave her to just potter around and she seems happy enough.
We were rewarded with a tiny egg from one of the others yesterday; we do love our chickens!
